The Masculine Love Boys Need

November 14th, 2008
· Filed Under: Fatherhood · Sons

Did you see the outcome of Proposition 8 on the California ballot last week?

52.3% of the voters told their state government that marriage in California should remain consistent with thousands of years of civilization’s history… between a man and a woman.

Not surprisingly, this has stirred up a hornet’s nest of opposition, protesting, and new legal challenges from those who want homosexuality to be legally endorsed.

So what does this have to do with us family dads?

Actually, a lot.

Perhaps most important is a reminder of the masculine love our sons need from us as their dad, and the wounds that can go deep into their soul when they do not receive it from us.

Wild at Heart by John EldredgeIn John Eldredge’s wildly popular book, Wild At Heart, which he wrote to help men heal from the wounds of our past and discover the secret of our souls, he says that what is missing in the hearts of those who are homosexual is masculine love, but the problem is that they’ve sexualized it.

Eldredge references Joseph Nicolosi who says that homosexuality is an attempt to repair the wound by filling it with masculinity, either the masculine love that was missing or the masculine strength many men feel they do not possess.

Sons can carry deep wounds in their hearts from fathers through our hurtful words, our neglect, abandonment, abuse, lack of attention and affirmation, our workaholism, our failure to validate their own masculinity…

All of which communicates to them… “I as your father do not love you. I am not proud of you. You are not worth my time, attention, and resources.”

Let me encourage you today, dad, to express your love to your son often. Affirm him. Encourage him. Spend time with him.

Even if he is difficult to love.

Teach him by your example and your words what it means to be a man — a man who loves God, loves his family, and loves people.

He desperately craves your masculine love.

Blessings to you and your family,
Joey Watkins

PS - If you have not read Wild At Heart, it has excellent insights for us men and is highly recommended. It’s on sale right now at www.DadResources.com

Post Election Message To Dads

November 7th, 2008
· Filed Under: Faith · Fatherhood · God

Now that US elections are over, what does it mean for us dads with families?

As it quickly became evident who the next US President would be, I actually got excited.

What?!?

No, not excited about who the next President will be.

After all, Barack Hussein Obama has the amazing non-partisan rank of 3rd most liberal Senator based on his actual voting record after only two years in office!

Knowing that a significant portion of the American people actually voted for someone with this record as their leader is very revealing of the true condition of the United States.

And that is what excites me — I see opportunity ahead.

Yes: Opportunity.

Opportunity for light to shine in darkness.

Opportunity for those of us dads who have found true life, hope, peace, and power in Jesus Christ to love people and offer real answers — real solutions — to their problems.

Because dark indeed will be the days ahead.

And the darker things become, the brighter true light will shine.

“You ARE the light of the world” is what Jesus said to His followers in Matthew chapter 6.

Not “TRY to be light” or “You SHOULD be light.”

So from one family dad to another, let me encourage you today to press on with greater hunger, desire, and resolve…

* To know God, study the Bible, and walk by faith

* To prioritize your family like never before

* To master your finances instead of be mastered by debt

* To improve your physical fitness without slacking

* To build strong, encouraging friendships with other dads

I believe these are the five core areas for dads with families to focus on: Faith, Family, Finances, Fitness, and Friendships.

In the midst of the darkness, great opportunity lies ahead to share abundant life with those who will be hurting, deceived, or facing hard times.

“I have come that they might have life, and have it abundantly” said Jesus Christ in John 10:10.

Blessings to you and your family,
Joey Watkins

Gary Keesee’s Story: Fixing The Money Thing

October 30th, 2008
· Filed Under: Faith · Money

Here’s a cool “God story” from a dad I met recently…

The year was 1990.

Gary Keesee was a husband, a dad to 3 children, a business owner, active in a local church, and in a lot of trouble.

Gary and his wife had TEN maxed out credit cards, three finance company loans, two car payments, unpaid medical bills, $14,000 in back taxes, and they even owed their parents $26,000.

Needless to say, Gary’s circumstances felt very overwhelming.

But Gary remembers the night when God revealed to him the solution to his financial problems.

When this happened, Gary and his wife Drenda held hands and agreed in prayer that they would not use debt any longer but would trust God for their finances.

This was quite a commitment for them because they had been leaning to debt on a regular basis to make up shortages in their cash flow.

Gary began to study his Bible, searching for answers, and applying anything he learned. When he began walking in the principles God showed him, he and Drenda paid all of that debt off in two and a half years!

He began paying cash for his cars, and was even able to pay cash for 55 acres of land that his family lives on today.

Gary Keesee Fixing The Money ThingGary and Drenda Keesee now have five children whom they homeschool, three businesses, pastor a growing church in Ohio called Faith Life Church, travel internationally speaking at conferences, record the television program “Faith Life Now”, and Gary has written a new book, Fixing The Money Thing, just released in September on the Kingdom principles God has shown him in the area of finances.

Last month, my family and I attended Gary’s conference in Florida and were able to meet and spend some time with Gary and Drenda. We are now personally applying what we learned in the area of finances and business so we can carry out God’s assignment for us and our family and be a blessing to many others.

Learn more about Gary’s new book and the conference he teaches.

If you know another dad who is under financial stress (or anyone for that matter!), send them to this blog post to read Gary’s encouraging story.

Blessings to you and your family,
Joey Watkins
Founder, FamilyDads

P.S. - Gary Keesee’s resources are excellent, and can be purchased for a needy friend or for yourself.
