Revolutionary Parenting by George Barna, Good Book for Dads to Read

Did you know that over 75,000 books have been written on parenting?

Whoa! That’s a lot of information out there for dads and moms.

And most dads like you and me won’t have the time nor interest to read even a tiny fraction of all those books.

Author George Barna, a dad himself with two daughters, (you may have heard of him, he is also a well-known Christian pollster and researcher) recently published a new book on parenting with a very unique twist:

“To amass a body of knowledge that could be absorbed and applied by all parents to help them mazimize their parenting potential.”

Sounds very worthwhile, doesn’t it?  After all, what parent doesn’t want to maximize their parenting potential?!!

But to write such a book, Barna’s team had to gather specific data from three sources:

1. Telephone surveys nationwide of parents with children under the age of 18. The parents were asked about their challenges, successes, and failures as parents.

2. Existing books on parenting practices, particularly those with a spiritual dimension. Those elements that were identified as significant were studied more closely.

3. Personal interviews of more than ten thousand (yes, 10,000!) young adults in their twenties who were leading “transformed” lives with genuine, mature faith (not merely church attenders.)

These young adults were asked what happened during their formative years that “worked.”

Their parents were then interviewed for their input on upbringing these children.

Would you like to know what the research revealed?

Revolutionary Parenting by George BarnaIt’s all laid out in a concise, timely book by George Barna called “Revolutionary Parenting.”

In the book, Barna starts with a look at the current crisis in American parenting, specifically as it relates to raising children with a Biblical worldview and an understanding of spiritual matters.

The next section… which is the bulk of the book… summarizes the parenting research that his team did.

The final section closes with a very personal chapter called “How Studying Revolutionary Parenting Changed Me” in which Barna talks about ten specific lessons he learned from his research that has impacted his own parenting of his two daughters, and he shares all this with the reader.

One dad reader commented…
“This is one of the few books every Christian parent must read! Great book!!! Wish it had been around years ago! If you are a new parent or even if your kids are already teens — you need this book. It is short: a fast, easy, but meaningful read.”

Resources For Dads

by Joey Watkins

Many of my thoughts in recent months have been consumed by the level of influence that we dads have in our children’s lives and future.

My favorite term for this is “father power” which is from Todd Wilson’s book by that title, Father Power.

We dads wield a power — a level of influence — in our children’s lives that very few of us have much understanding of or are taking advantage of.

How do I know this is true?

Because I look at the amount of time we spend at our work, hobbies, tv, sports, Internet browsing, and our other interests compared to the amount of time we spend with our children.

The harsh reality is that we practice daily what we truly value. All the rest is just talk.

That is why I created a resource website for dads at www.DadResources.com

I want you as a dad to know about and have access to the very best resources available on fatherhood so you can maximize your father power in your family and effectively influence your sons and daughters with your values and faith while they are still at home with you.

And because you model fatherhood to your sons, when they become dads one day, they will be able to look back at how you raised them and have that as a very positive, healthy example.

Bookmark www.DadResources.com right now as your “go-to” site for dad resources.

And help spread the word about this resource site by telling other dads you know about www.DadResources.com.

If a particular resource has significantly impacted your life as a dad that isn’t already on this site, please let me know.

Preparing our Children For Life

Important question today for us dads…

What are we doing to prepare our children for life?

Yes, we may be sending them to school every day to gain academic education. But what are WE doing as their dad (not “outsourcing”) to prepare them for… LIFE?

Just asking this question logically brings up a preceding question: Aside from academic knowledge and skills, what do our children NEED in order to be prepared for life?

Here’s an example… Something all dads would probably agree on is that our children need wisdom about money. They will need to know how to balance a checkbook, the difference between needs/wants/wastes, delayed gratification, impulse buying, borrowing money, dangers of debt, investing, etc.

Relationships, spirituality, communication, and health are just a few of the many other areas.

We dads have the privilege, authority, and responsibility of preparing our children for life – but we must be intentional.

I know how easy it is as a dad to miss this in the busy-ness of our own daily life and our work, and to just passively let our kids grow up alongside us.

So I encourage you to give deliberate thought to this matter of preparing your children for life. Pray about it. Discuss it with your wife. Make a written list and bullet points associated with each area. And at the appropriate ages, begin to implement each item on your list, so that your children will be WELL PREPARED FOR LIFE!

Today’s Recommended Dad Resource

Living On The Third River is a very easy-to-read and practical resource to teach your children about money and financial provision from a correct Biblical perspective. It begins with a story (parable) of 3 men who live on the side of a mountain along three rivers and how each man uses the water flowing down his river. The author then gives exceptional teaching on money, mammon, sparrow faith, and receiving more of God’s unlimited resources to channel into His Kingdom. This resource can help you and your family gain a new, profound understanding of a lifestyle that depends on God’s provision and blessing others with the resources God has entrusted to you.
